Thick and Thin
Garage Headquarters: San Francisco, CA
Driver: Chris Hastings
Mechanics: Gregg Crosby, Nate Barsetti, Kevin Birchfield
Nuts and Bolts:
In the Castro District, there’s always plenty of eye candy. But when you’re hungry for something more substantial, step over to the LookOut at the corner of Market and 16th Streets – a friendly, casual bar with great drinks, an awesome balcony, and…a pizza place built right in! While New Yorkers and Chicagoans argue about who has the superior pie, Thick and Thin offers the best of both worlds, with tantalizing thin crust and decadent deep dish, enhanced by the Californian twist of fresh toppings. Nestled inconspicuously in the LookOut, Thick and Thin is one of those secrets that San Francisco insiders keep to themselves.
But on October 18, the secret will be out, so to speak, as Nate Barsetti, Kevin Birchfield, Gregg Crosby, and Chris Hastings present the Thick and Thin racer. Chris, who will be driving the soapbox car, says, “We’re like the Village People of ‘zas; putting the ‘MO’ in ‘more pizza,’” and evidently the teammates thought that carbo-loading would be a perfect competition strategy. The blueprint for their racer reveals an extra-extra-large pie, with Chris steering (if that’s even possible) from the very middle. Construction space is at a premium in San Francisco, but fortunately a friend is letting the crew assemble their crazy Frisbee of a racecar in his motorcycle garage. “This contest is a good excuse to roll out of control down a steep hill to a horde of screaming fans – because everybody loves pizza,” Chris comments. With a smile he adds, “Our biggest challenge will be not eating our soapbox before the race.”
