Team Shine: The Big One
Garage Headquarters: San Francisco, CA
Driver: Matt Hosley
Mechanics: Trip Hosley, Nate Hosley, Riel Peloquin, Ben Paula
Nuts and Bolts:
It takes quite a team to be successful in San Francisco, yet the Hosley brothers – Matt, Nathan, and Trip – have done it not once, but twice: with the Hayes Valley restaurant Sauce and the SoMa dance lounge Shine. (Yeah, they like monosyllables and sibilants. So what?) Now the Hosleys are tackling what may be their biggest challenge ever: designing a soapbox racer.
They couldn’t have better support. Chef Ben Paula, a co-owner of Shine and Sauce, is helping to cook up an amazing entry they call “The Big One,” while Riel Peloquin, a Sauce bartender, is pouring on suggestions based on his years of expertise as a rabid NASCAR fan. And that’s not all. The group is hosting an “essay contest” for DJs who think they have what it takes to back up the team’s presentation by entertaining the crowd on race day. Trip comments with a laugh, “People who don’t live here always ask if we are afraid of ‘The Big One,’ so we decided we should give them something to fear!” Matt jumps in, “If the past holds true from our experiences with art cars and music festivals and such, our vehicle will be primarily composed of duct tape and bailing wire. But this is a chance to celebrate our love of San Francisco in a creative, nutty competition that’s potentially lethal…in a good way.”
