Rubik's Projects
Garage Headquarters:
Driver: Chris Foley
Mechanics: Brian Rasmusen (co-pilot), Brett First
Nuts and Bolts:
Chris Foley, Brett First, and Brian Rasmusen are San Francisco State University students with a variety of interests. These modern-day Renaissance men like to cook (a new recipe every week), they spin fire poi and take part in fire dancing, and they’re addicted to techno music. Yet another of their hobbies is puzzles, and that’s why they’ve designed one of the more improbable contenders in the Red Bull Soapbox Race lineup: a car shaped like a Rubik’s Cube. “I think the Rubik’s Cube is a great puzzle that everyone recognizes – it’s very challenging and can shock people just like my car is going to do!” team captain Chris explains, noting that he can solve a typical cube in less than 100 seconds. “With its solid metal frame and lightweight exoskeleton shell, our aerodynamic Cube will defy all odds and cut through the air to a record-breaking finish!”
A cinema student, Chris has used time-lapse photography to capture every phase of the racer’s construction (check out http://sites.google.com/site/rubiksprojects), and he’s also composing original music for the obligatory skit, in which team members clad in colorful Spandex will create a living Rubik’s puzzle before Chris and Brian launch down the racecourse. The optimistic team captain predicts, “When the crowd sees our impossible Cube car racing down the street and solving itself, they’ll give in to our genius and vote for us!”
