Nuts and Bolts:
Stephen Barone, Chris D’Angelo, Nick D'Angelo, Brett Smith, and Kirk Smith met as kids at New Hampshire’s Spofford Lake, and though they’re now grown up, they’re still messing around there – building a vehicle for the Red Bull Soapbox Race. “We are weekend warriors who go all out when we have any time off,” says Nick, the team’s driver, “and we always play to win.”
Finding that time off can be tricky, as four of the teammates are still in school (Roger Williams University, the University of Rhode Island, and Western New England College) and all five work. But determination to be first at the checkered flag, as well as a crazy sense of fun, keeps them going. They’re designing their racer to resemble some significantly colorful footwear. “We are all Red Sox fans, and we thought that it would be funny to see a big red sock flying down a hill,” Nick elucidates. Noting that they’re experimenting with metals and fabrics to achieve the effect, he continues, “Brett has built cars, so he can give us general direction.” The driver comments that the Providence event is a chance to show people “what we can do and how funny and fun this can be,” and reminds, “we plan on winning.”
