Nuts and Bolts:

Here’s a novel strategy: in an attempt to be winners at the Red Bull Soapbox Race, one innovative team will do their best to act like losers. But perhaps it’s not as crazy as it sounds, because the losers they’ll be imitating had one of the most successful television sitcoms of the 1980s and 90s, “Married with Children.” On September 6, Philadelphians Paul Bonis, Brian Domergue, Garrett Hetrick, Rob Miller, and Joe Pollack will portray the hapless Bundy clan – shoe salesman Al, coiffure-challenged Peggy, hottie daughter Kelly, babe-crazy son Bud, and even the dog (whatever its name was) – while racing a car shaped just like the fictional family’s tasteless, tacky sofa.

The five teammates have been friends for over a decade; but now that they’re all nearing 30, with responsibilities including careers in accounting, office and account management, and carpentry, they find that they have to make a special effort to get together. “The Red Bull Soapbox Race is a fun event for the community and another excuse for the guys to hang out,” says Brian, the team’s captain. “Our biggest challenge is organizing everyone’s time to build the soapbox.” In-between construction sessions, the team members have been practicing their best Al Bundy one-liners, hunting for bouffant wigs, choreographing the “Love and Marriage” theme song – and arguing over who should play curvy Kelly. Not to mention who should dress up like the dog.
