Shaken, Not Stirred
Garage Headquarters: Walnut, CA
Driver: Phillip Allen
Mechanics: Enoch Hwang, Kevin Choi, Azmina Ghelani
Nuts and Bolts:
For Team Shaken, Not Stirred, the contest on September 26 is only the beginning. Two of the teammates, Phillip Allen and Enoch Hwang, are juniors majoring in mechanical engineering at Cal Poly Pomona, and they’re planning on using their racer as the foundation for a senior project. “We’re going to convert it to electric power,” explains Phillip. “This vehicle will be lightweight, economical, fast, safe, and fun…perfect for short commutes in the suburbs.”
Joining Phillip and Enoch in the soapbox portion of their endeavor are Kevin Choi and Azmina Ghelani, both juniors at UCLA. (Kevin also studies mechanical engineering, while Azmina focuses on biology and psychology.) They’re a tight crew – going back to their middle school days in Walnut, California. “We’re excited for this race, and we expect to win over the crowd by creating a feast for the eyes and ears,” attests Phillip, who will play the role of 007. “We want to emulate the sensuous James Bond cars that rely on stunning good looks and amazing gadgets – which there will be PLENTY of!” The teammates hope that their extracurricular efforts won’t affect the results of their exams in the weeks preceding the race (Thermodynamics, Fluid Mechanics, Differential Equations, Chemistry, Behavioral Neuroscience, and so on). But they’re determined to ensure that the Los Angeles spectators enjoy their show. “Ideas we have come up with will surprise and entertain everyone,” Phillip promises. “Our efforts have been focused on creating a vehicle that is both believable and equally inconceivable.”
