Nuts and Bolts:

If this were a motorcycle race, we’d be able to predict a winner right now, because the names of the co-pilots for Team “Great Scott’s” – Emler and Sands – are legendary in the moto industry. For those of you who associate the words “two stroke” with a major embolism, here’s some background: Don Emler is widely regarded as the founding father of the motocross hop-up business. As a motocross pro himself, he started tweaking his own bikes in the 1970s, and he went on to found FMF Racing, the Compton-based company whose name means power and performance to riders everywhere. His son Donny Emler, who will be one of the “Great Scott” drivers, is a chip off the ol’ chassis – he grew up racing and learning everything he could about the sport and the industry. Donny still races whenever he can, and he leads the FMF brand as the company’s marketing director. Meanwhile Roland Sands, who will be driving the soapbox car with Donny, grew up riding streetbikes and was the AMA 250GP National Champion. Today, as founder and owner of Roland Sands Design in La Palma, he is one of the most talented designers in the business. His bikes have earned more awards and magazine covers than he can count.

Of course, this isn’t a motorcycle race, but Donny, Roland, and their teammates Rodney Aguiar, Erika Decker, Ryan Hoover, Phil Hunt, and Nicole Zoeter seem just as stoked anyway. They’re going with a “Back to the Future” theme that they say will “bring the party to the party” in downtown Los Angeles. Donny, who stands at 6’4”, will be taking the role of the wacky inventor Doc, and Roland, who is (as Donny so kindly puts it) “tiny,” will be channeling Marty McFly. “Hopefully we can sky the jump and pull a trick,” Donny comments. “Between the RSD and FMF vibe, we are coming to bring it and take this thing home!”
