Babe Watch
Garage Headquarters: El Segundo, CA
Driver: Dylan Gonzalez
Mechanics: Steven Green, Tyler Leonard
Nuts and Bolts:
“I happened to be in San Francisco for the Red Bull Soapbox Race there – the crowd was immense and the energy was amazing,” says Dylan Gonzalez, a senior at San Diego State University. “The cars looked so fun to drive and even more fun to build. Once I saw the winners standing on the podium, I decided that I was going to sack up and enter one of these events. And the fact that this one is in downtown L.A., my home town, made it impossible to pass up.”
Sacking up with Dylan in Los Angeles will be Chris Bald, Steven Greene, Tyler Leonard, and Tamer Makeen. The whole group wants to give a shout-out to Tom Lee at High-Tech Welding in Vernon, California, who guided and sponsored them in building their frame, as well as Matt Chernega from Nexus Metalworks, who helped with the wheel mounts and steering system. Dylan states, “The main inspiration for our soapbox was Los Angeles, which we all know is home to many celebrities and beaches. When one thinks of awesome celebrities and awesome beaches, only one thing comes to mind: ‘Bay Watch’! The Hoff, Pam Anderson, sun, surf…drama! It’s time to turn that epic show into an epic, gravity-propelled, scaled-down lifeguard tower!” It’s hard to argue with that kind of reasoning, especially when Dylan hints that he’s hoping they can convince one of their teammates to make the ultimate sacrifice and don a blond wig, squeeze into a woman’s bathing suit, and run around in “slow motion” to show off his (her?) assets. Dylan asserts, “After the spectators see us in our entire beach-bashing glory, they’ll surely award us with the People’s Choice!”
