Team Save Ferris
Garage Headquarters: Broomfield, CO
Driver: Matt Fisher
Mechanics: Josh McGuckin, Jeremiah Hueske, Sandra Hueske, James Olson
Nuts and Bolts:
Team Save Ferris figures that no matter how much home-made technology they put into their soapbox racer, the key to winning is going to be the skill of the driver. And if they’re right about that, their chances for the podium are very, very good, because their driver is pro mountain biker Matt Fisher. For a man who makes his living by hurling himself down muddy, stony, tree-filled slopes, contending on a course lined with nice, soft bales of hay should seem like a day at the spa.
Matt originally met fellow team members Jeremiah Hueske and Josh McGuckin through biking, and now all three are in the Industrial Design program at the Metropolitan State College of Denver. Rounding out the Soapbox effort are student Sandra Hueske (Jeremiah’s wife) and their web-developer buddy James Olson. Although the five friends were toddlers – at most – in the mid-1980s when the movie “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off” was released, they’ve chosen to recreate the film’s 1961 Ferrari 250GT California Spyder for their racer. “Ferris will be recognizable for the crowd,” explains Josh, who works as a photographer and creative director when he’s not studying for his classes or building fake Ferraris. “We’ve got a lot of confidence in our driver, and if this goes well, we’re going to apply for a Red Bull Flugtag event and see if we can make something that’ll fly!”
