The Loafing Leprechauns
Garage Headquarters: Duluth, GA
Driver: Brian Harris
Mechanics: Jared Flemming, Corey Brookshier, Eric Stokes
Nuts and Bolts:
Faith and begorrah, ‘tis some wearin’ o’ the green that’s planned for the Red Bull Soapbox Race. Who be those lads under the flag of Eire? Why sure an’ they’re the team from that fine restaurant and Irish pub, the Loafing Leprechaun. It’s the pride of Duluth, Georgia. Brian Harris (now there’s a fine Irish name!) owns the establishment, while Corey Brookshier, Jared Flemming, and Eric Stokes pour the best ale this side of the Atlantic. If they’re as successful at racing a soapbox car as they are at pleasing their customers, they’re sure to be contenders.
“Our inspiration was Saint Patrick’s Day, and also the realization that the race is an excuse to party,” Brian says during a break from the team’s soapbox build at Eric’s house. “Our racer will be made of gold…and duct tape.” The plan for race day is to present a racecar shaped like a pot of gold, driven by two not-so-wee “leprechauns” who happen to speak with charming drawls, y’all. (They must be from southern Ireland.) Brian boasts, “We have no shame, and people will love us, win or lose. Our skit and music are going to be hip-hop meets Riverdance.” But the teammates do intend be the first to find the rainbow at the end of the race course, and that’s no blarney.
